Norwegian startup Elliptic Labs demonstrated a smartphone and a tablet running without touching its screen. Performed in the space of hand gestures are recognized by ultrasonic sensors.
New technology to manage mobile devices using spatial gestures may be on the market as early as next year. The technology operates by ultrasonic chip which generates a special radiation can interpret the user’s hand movements. The main difference from similar technology is that the user does not need to make gestures in front of screen smartphone – ultrasound perceives gestures from a distance of up to a meter, which greatly increases the ease of use. Another advantage of the new items is that the chip has a very wide angle coverage gestures to 180 degrees.
Another advantage of the product is that it can work in total darkness and spends at least charge the device battery. In the smartphone Galaxy S4 there is an infrared sensor that can also read gestures, but it works in a very narrow range and at a short distance.
The current technology for gesture recognition is not too comfortable, so long as the user needs to catch the point of work to smartphone saw him – said Erik Forsström, chief designer of Elliptic Labs. – By giving users more freedom, we will be able to offer a qualitatively new devices and capabilities. The company presented a demo version of the technology. Elliptic Labs plans before the end of the year to complete negotiations with any of the major manufacturers that already in 2014 appeared on the market with the support of the ultrasonic device gestures.
